Humana has announced that Aetna Inc. will acquire Humana in a $37 Billion agreement under which Aetna will acquire all outstanding shares of Humana.

For those unfamiliar, Aetna is one of the nation’s leading diversified health care benefits companies, serving an estimated 46 million people. Aetna stated it will make Louisville the headquarters for its Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE businesses and will maintain a significant corporate presence in Louisville.

The merger announcement noted  that the combined entities will play to the strengths of both companies leveraging Humana’s growing Medicare Advantage business with Aetna’s portfolio and commercial capabilities making Aetna the second largest managed care company in the U.S. The acquisition should help drive better value by reducing administrative costs and help provide higher-quality health care leveraging the best practices from both companies.
Update: Aetna announced that the shareholders of both Aetna and Humana have approved proposals related to the pending Humana acquisition.
