Berea College Music Professor Kathy Bullock to Present – "Singing in the Spirit: The African American Sacred Music Tradition" at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea
On Sunday, October 5, Berea College music professor Kathy Bullock will give a musical performance/presentation titled “Singing in the Spirit: The African American Sacred Music Tradition” from 3:00 – 4:00 at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
In this presentation, through songs, stories and performance, Dr. Bullock will take the audience on a musical journey from West Africa, through the middle passage, to the North American shores where the African American culture was forged. This participatory program includes rhythm tapping and response singing allowing the audience to experience the beauty, joy and power of this music and culture.
Professor Kathy Bullock was born and raised in the District of Washington D.C. one of five daughters in a family of 6 children. Her father was the minister for 45 years of the large congregation at the original Mt. Bethel Baptist Church. From her early years, she was very active in the church which served as a leading community center, provided space for voting, caring for kids, tutoring, scouts, and music lessons – which is where Professor Bullock began taking piano at age 5.
Learning to read music and capturing music by ear in the traditional oral method that was alive in her church community, Professor Bullock sang in choirs and was part of a four sister singing ensemble. Also adept on the flute, Professor Bullock played in the band and was a member of the D.C. University Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from a high school which specialized in the arts, she went on to earn her BA degree from Brandeis University in MA. Professor Bullock received her Masters in Music and PHD in music theory, from Washington University in Kansas City. She is in her 18th year of teaching on the music faculty at Berea College and is the director of the Gospel Choir whose concerts are eagerly awaited each year by music lovers throughout the region. Professor Bullock leads workshops with “Village Harmony” which is based in Vermont and just returned this summer from teaching a workshop in Ireland.
The musical presentation, “Singing in the Spirit: The African American Sacred Music Tradition” by Berea College professor Kathy Bullock will be held Sunday, October 5, 2008 beginning at 3:00 PM in the private dining room of the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. This presentation is free and open to the public and is funded in part by the Kentucky Humanities Council, Inc. and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea is located at 975 Walnut Meadow Road, just off Interstate 75 at exit 77 (Berea). The Center’s exhibits, shopping, and travel information areas are all open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the café from 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
