Fiber Artist Joyce Cooper to Demonstrate Decorative Machine Quilting at Kentucky Artisan Center
On Friday, October 5, fiber artist Joyce Cooper of Berea will be demonstrating decorative machine quilting from 10:30 am – 3:30 pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
A native of Niagara Falls, New York, Joyce Cooper began her work with fabric when as a young girl she learned sewing and cross stitching from her grandmother. Joyce began her career in crafts by making candles in her kitchen and after many years of candle making, came back to fabrics and stitching. Moving to Berea in 1985, Joyce and her husband Gerald ran The Cooper Shop in Old Town, Berea, for 14 years. Joyce is a juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen as well as the Southern Highland Craft Guild.
A quilt is defined by many as a fabric sandwich with three layers. Often the two outer layers are of lightweight cotton and the middle layer is a batting or filler of some sort. These layers are attached by quilting stitches or by tying to make a mat, blanket, or wall hanging. Often a binding, or narrow fabric covering, is stitched over the edges of a quilt to finish it.
Quilting is the stitching that goes through all layers of the quilt, holding them together and adding interesting designs. Quilting can create its own design, like feathered plumes, can follow the lines of the fabric pieces, and can fill in spaces with irregular meandering (called Stippling).
Joyce creates numerous items by piecing and then machine quilting the top and bottom layers together and she will be demonstrating the numerous decorative ways that she stitches with a machine.
Works by Joyce Cooper are regularly found at the Kentucky Artisan Center, located just off Interstate 75 at exit 77 (Berea).
