Sue Reeves to Demonstrate Weaving on the Loom Oct. 31 at Kentucky Artisan Center
On Saturday, Oct. 31, Richmond artist Sue Reeves will demonstrate weaving on the loom at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
A Richmond native, Reeves was taught to sew at the age of eight by her mother, who came from a family of seamstresses. Reeves received her Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Ohio Wesleyan University, and the summer after graduating, she went to Berea College to learn weaving and pottery. Reeves then went on to teach school for 32 years.
Reeves always wanted to weave, and her husband purchased an old LeClerc loom for her at auction in 1980. When she discovered that the hand brake on this loom was inoperable, a fellow weaver, Dorie Hubbard, of Berea, was able to get her loom fixed and working.

Hubbard encouraged Reeves to join the Berea Weavers Guild, and when Reeves did, she realized a spark of creativity. She began to weave colorful scarves from the chenille yarns she had purchased from Churchill Weavers when it closed. She enjoys weaving this fiber because of its glossy sheen and softness.
Works by Reeves are regularly available at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, located at 200 Artisan Way, just off Interstate 75 at Berea, Exit 77. The center’s exhibits, shopping and travel information areas are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the cafe open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
