BEREA, Ky. (October 1, 2004) -- On Sunday, October 10, Jerri Schlenker of Olive Hill, will demonstrate weaving Scottish and Celtic patterns on the loom from 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.

Born and raised in Olive Hill, Jerri Schlenker has a BA degree in art from Morehead State University but is completely self-taught in weaving. Jerri’s painting background helps her combine vivid colors in her weavings, and develop new designs based on traditional Scottish plaids. Her research into different Scottish patterns such as Black Watch, MacLoed, Prince Charles Stewart, and Buchanan are specifically associated with a Scottish family name and are used in traditional kilts. Jerri has incorporated these historical Scottish plaid designs into one of her lines of table runners and rugs.

Jerri weaves using cotton threads in both the weft (cross wise threads -or width) and the warp (the threads going length wise in the weaving) of her cotton rag rugs which is different from standard weaving practice. This makes Jerri’s work very user friendly – it is machine washable and all cotton. Other materials she uses include tobacco bailing cord, rags cut into strips and orlon acrylic. Jerri often does individual commissions to match specific colors and patterns. For her demonstration at the Center, she will use a traditional four harness loom. Jerri’s rugs, placemats, and table runners can regularly be found at the KY Artisan Center
