EXHIBITION: "An Artful Array: Bowls by Kentucky Artisans" at Kentucky Arisan Center at Berea
The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea announces an exhibition titled, An Artful Array: Bowls by Kentucky Artisans on display Aug. 27, 2011 - Feb. 25, 2012.
This exhibition showcases a wide range of works created by 41 Kentucky artisans working in clay, wood, glass, fiber and stone. Bowls included are both functional and non-functional with some works becoming pure sculpture.
Numerous works follow a functional path such as Laura Ross’s “Blue Dot Bowl Stack” whose six bowls stack up with a lid as the finale. The resultant shape looks like a high rise building but practical storage is also inherent in its design. Brook White has created a work that mimics nature with his glass bowl titled “Green Fluke” whose striped glass, attached fins and stretched form resemble the mouth of a whale.
In a non-functional vein, Michael Frasca takes eight stoneware bowls and joins them together into a diamond shaped wall sculpture that is breathtaking in its size and simplicity. Fiber artist Justine Dennis stitches cotton thread and material into a shallow bowl titled “Mitosis” with the interior colorful stitched patterns suggesting its name. Chris Ramsey has created a non-functional but exceptional bowl form with an undulating natural bark edge titled “Have Another Cherry” created on a lathe from an extremely large wild Cherry tree.

An open to the public meet-the-artists reception will be held on Sunday, Sept. 18, from 1-3 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea is located at 200 Artisan Way, just off Interstate 75 at exit 77 (Berea).
The Center’s exhibits, shopping and travel information areas are open daily from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. and the café from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Admission is free. The Center currently features works by more than 650 artisans from 100 counties across the Commonwealth.
