BEREA, Ky. (October 1, 2004) -- On Saturday, October 9, Author Alma Roberts of Monticello, will sign her book "House Calls: Memoirs of Life with a Kentucky Doctor" from 11:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.

Born and raised in Wayne County, Alma Roberts has written this book about life surrounding her late husband Dr. Mack Roberts who practiced medicine in rural Kentucky for sixty-one years (1932-1993). But the book is much more – it is part biography, part autobiography, and part documentation of rural Kentucky life in Wayne, Pulaski, Clinton, and McCreary counties during the 90 years that Dr. Mack Roberts held together the lives and limbs of his patients. People called at Dr. Robert’s home at all hours and he made house calls by day and by night up until he was 90 years of age. Dr. Mack Robert’s dedication and service made him a local legend and this book, published by the Jesse Stuart Foundation, describes a medical practice that spanned decades of changes both social and medical.

The surprising thing about Alma Robert’s book is that in telling this story she places us back in time to an era where labor, and love blend. She paints an inspiring portrait of a family dedicated to helping others and she sprinkles her telling with personal insights and humorous malapropisms that keep the reader both amazed and chuckling.
