Tuesday, December 18, 2012 Well-known as the “Folk Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky,” Berea is home to many galleries, shops, working artist studios and the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. One-of-a-kind gifts can always be found throughout the town, with some Berea artisan studios creating gifts especially for Christmas. At the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Christmas-themed presents can also be found year-round.

Tuesday, December 18, 2012 On Saturday, Dec. 22, Carl Von Fischer, of Mount Vernon, will demonstrate oil painting from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
- Joe Offerman Demonstrates Carved Wooden Santas at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea
Tuesday, December 04, 2012 On Saturday, Dec. 8, Joe Offerman, of Owensboro, will carve and sculpt wood into a variety of Santa sculptures and ornaments from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
A self-taught wood carver, Offerman took up his craft in 1985, after retiring as a speech and language pathologist. His Santa carvings, “wood spirits,” holiday ornaments and shelf mice all show the dexterity and marks of his carving knife.

Tuesday, December 04, 2012 The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will offer visitors free guided gallery tours through the center’s current special exhibit, “The Threads That Bind: Textile Works by Kentucky Artisans,” on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m.
These free guided exhibit tours will be led by Kentucky Artisan Center staff who will talk about the exhibits, the artists and individual works. Staff will answer questions about the techniques and various processes used in the objects featured.
- Governor’s Proclamation Announced at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea
Thursday, November 29, 2012 Surrounded by an array of gifts, a life-sized Santa and an 18-foot holiday tree decorated with handmade ornaments, First Lady Jane Beshear, along with regional artisans and dignitaries, announced Governor Steve Beshear’s proclamation of December, 2012, as “Give a Gift Made in Kentucky Month,” in a ceremony today at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
Joining the First Lady were local gallery owners, craftspeople, and business owners, along with Tourism Arts and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Marcheta Sparrow; Madeline Abramson; executive director of the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Victoria Faoro; Lori Meadows, executive director of the Kentucky Arts Council; and Kerri Hensley, assistant director of Berea Tourism, to pronounce the “Give a Gift Made in Kentucky” proclamation – an investment in Kentucky and its talented and creative people. Demonstrating artists added to this festive event with Lindy Evans sculpting her Santas and Gerald Cooper carving wooden jewelry from walnut.
- Robert Brigl Sculpts Clay Face Jugs at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea
Tuesday, November 27, 2012 On Saturday, Dec. 1, Robert Brigl, from Bowling Green, will sculpt clay face jugs from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
Drawn to the traditional forms of American folk pottery, Brigl makes both functional and sculptural ceramic jugs and bottles on the potter’s wheel. He sculpts these thrown forms with faces and figures by adding coils and pieces of clay to their surfaces. He often makes the eyes from white porcelain clay.

Tuesday, November 13, 2012 On Saturday, Nov. 17, authors Fred A. Engle Jr. and Robert N. Grise, will sign copies of their book “Madison’s Heritage Rediscovered – Stories from a Historic Kentucky County” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
- Berea Welcome Center Carvers ‘Cut-it-Up’ at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea
Tuesday, November 13, 2012 On Saturday, Nov 17, three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate woodcarving techniques from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
Carving that day will be Keith Flowers of Richmond, as well as Jack Gann and Will Bondurant from Berea. Bondurant specializes in chip carving, a style of woodcarving in which knives are used to remove small chips of wood from the surface of a single piece of wood. Flowers enjoys carving a variety of characters, while Gann carves both animals and figures with ease.

Tuesday, October 23, 2012 On Saturday, Oct. 27, woodcarver Bob Gibson of Lawrenceburg will demonstrate how he carves wooden duck decoys, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
- Berea Welcome Center Carvers Demonstrate Woodcarving Techniques at Kentucky Artisan Center
Tuesday, October 16, 2012 On Saturday, Oct. 20, three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate woodcarving techniques from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
Carving that day will be Will Bondurant, of Berea, Ron McWhorter, of Richmond, and John Ferguson, of Berea. Bondurant specializes in spoon carvings with a Celtic theme, while Ferguson enjoys carving a variety of animals and characters. McWhorter carves directly from split logs using turn-of-the- century tools to create oval dough bowls. Using an adz, chisel and hammer, McWhorter carves his oval bowls smooth on the inside, while keeping the marks and cuts from his tools visible on the outer surface.
- Musicians LaMay & Reese to Perform at Kentucky Artisan Center
Tuesday, October 16, 2012 On Saturday, Oct. 20, musicians Joe LaMay and Sherri Reese will sing both original and traditional songs accompanied by guitar and banjo from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
The combination of two traditional instruments, the guitar and banjo, provide the perfect frame for LaMay & Reese’s well-honed ballads, stories, songs, and humor. Their appreciation of the old songs is evident in their singing style and songwriting.

Tuesday, October 09, 2012 On Saturday, Oct. 13, Berea College senior Jennifer Salyer will demonstrate broom making at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
Salyer, of Milford, Ohio, is a math education major who also serves as the student manager in broom making at Berea. She has worked in broom craft at the college for three years. Her demonstration will be from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m

- Meet-the-Artists Exhibit Reception Sept. 30 – Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea
Tuesday, September 18, 2012 A meet-the-artist reception will be held Sunday, Sept. 30, from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea for the center’s exhibition “The Threads That Bind: Textile Works by Kentucky Artisans.” This exhibit features pieces composed of fabric, fiber and/or thread, with significant use of thread or other fiber strands to weave, embellish, construct, shape, quilt or otherwise create the design.
Many of the 21 textile artists whose work is on display will join visitors for the Sept. 30 reception. At 1:30 p.m., a short program will begin in the exhibit gallery with artists present speaking a few minutes about their work and their exhibition piece. Following this program, artists will remain on hand to answer questions and talk further with visitors. Light refreshments will be served throughout the event. This reception is free and open to the public.

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 On Sunday, Sept. 16, actor Ethan Sullivan Smith will portray a Confederate soldier in a Kentucky Chautauqua performance titled “Johnny Green – An Orphan’s Survival 1841-1920,” at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. The performance at 2 p.m. is free and open to the public.

Thursday, May 31, 2012 AmericanStyle magazine’s annual readers’ poll recommends Berea, as a top arts destination for collectors and travelers who love galleries, museums and arts festivals. This ranking and designation is highly coveted by tourism and arts promoters and confirms Berea as the “Folk Arts & Craft Capital of Kentucky.”
Each year, readers tell AmericanStyle their favorite cities for viewing and buying fine craft and art. In the 2012 AmericanStyle poll, Berea has been ranked No. 21 among small cities, a category that includes such destinations as Sarasota, Fla. (No.1); Asheville, N.C. (No. 3); Santa Fe, N.M. (No. 5); Taos, N.M. (No. 11); and Laguna Beach, Calif. (No.16).

Tuesday, May 22, 2012 Christa Smith, of Elizabethtown, whose work is regularly featured at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, has been featured with her “bride boxes” in an article in the June issue of Early American Life magazine. The magazine is a source for information on early American style, decorating, and traditions, and it covers both antiques and reproductions made by artisans working in period styles with traditional tools.
Smith will be demonstrating her painted bridal boxes at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea on Saturday, May 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday, May 15, 2012 At 2:15 p.m. on Friday, May 11, the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea welcomed its 2 millionth visitor, Jennifer Price, from Louisville. Jennifer was traveling on Interstate -75 with her husband, James, and their three young children, Madeline, David and Julianna. Marcheta Sparrow, secretary of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, was on hand to present a Kentucky gift basket to Jennifer and her family.

Heffner will answer questions about the techniques and various processes used to create these bowls. Each 15-minute tour is given at 11 a.m. and again at 2 p.m.

Thursday, April 21, 2011 On April 23, 2011, a new exhibit entitled; "LaVon Williams: Kentucky Folk Artist - Works from the Kentucky Folk Art Center at Morehead State University Collection," opens in the lobby of the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. This exhibit, which is a collaborative effort with the Kentucky Folk Art Center (KFAC) at Morehead State University, showcases a wide range of carved wood sculptures created by Williams. The exhibit of works from KFAC’s permanent collection will be on display in the center’s lobby through Aug. 1, 2011.

Friday, April 08, 2011 When Robert Redford’s film production crews were looking for historically accurate articles for the film, The Conspirator, set in 1865, they turned to Kentucky artisan Heidi Sanner of Candle Bee Farm for beeswax candles made using traditional methods and organic beeswax produced by her own bees.
Sanner was contacted through her website Candle Bee Farm, by the Assistant Property Master from California based Conspirator Productions, which purchased her natural colored, hand rolled, beeswax dinner tapers for use in the film shot in Savannah, Georgia. Sanner’s beeswax tapers appear in numerous scenes in Redford’s film The Conspirator scheduled to be released in theaters April 15.

Wednesday, September 29, 2010 Spurred creatively by the opportunity to have their works for sale at the Kentucky Artisan Center’s Satellite store during the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, numerous Kentucky artisans who regularly sell at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, have created brand new designs based on equestrian themes.
One such Kentucky artisan with new designs is Melvin Rowe of Pottery Rowe in Louisville. Rowe, an avid horseman, has been designing pottery with equestrian motifs for nearly two years since learning that the World Equestrian Games were coming to Kentucky. “Knowing that the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea was going to have a Satellite Store at WEG gave me the opportunity to further explore designs in equestrian art. I got really excited by all the possible ways that I could design works with horse imagery. “

Wednesday, September 22, 2010 On Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., McClanahan Press cookbook authors David Domine, of Louisville, will be signing copies of his new cookbook A Splash of Bourbon and Kathy Mayfield and Suzy Smith of Winchester, will sign their cookbook Sterling Bits within the Kentucky Artisan Center Satellite Store.
On Sunday, Sept. 26, from 10:30 a.m. - 2:30p.m., glass artist Steve Scherer, of Edmonton, will demonstrate how he creates his unique glass ornaments. Using traditional ‘lampworking’ techniques, Scherer will form intricate handmade horses and animals from ‘canes’ of glass with a torch.

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will showcase the creative works of over 400 of its Kentucky artisans in a satellite store created for The Kentucky Experience complex at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games being held at the Kentucky Horse Park Sept. 25 - Oct. 10, 2010.
Housed inside the Kentucky Proud Product Pavilion, which is one of three buildings that make up The Kentucky Experience complex, this Kentucky Artisan Center Satellite Store will be a smaller version of the center’s main facility off I-75, but will look and feel very much the same.

To celebrate Kentucky being internationally known for its horses and the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will display The Horse: Interpretations by Kentucky Artisans from Aug. 28, 2010 - Feb. 26, 2011. This exhibition showcases how Kentucky Artisans interpret this amazing animal using their respective mediums and includes works in both two and three dimensional formats by 39 Kentucky artisans. Mediums include painting, hand-bound books, photography, sculpture, fiber, metal, wood and clay.

- "Creatures & Characters: Works by Kentucky Woodcarvers" - New Exhibition at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea
Saturday, May 31, 2008 The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea’s newest exhibition, "Creatures & Characters: Works by Kentucky Woodcarvers", will be on display from June 7 – September 21, 2008. This exhibit showcases the many styles and techniques of Kentucky’s woodcarvers as they depict real or imagined ‘creatures’ and ‘characters.’
Featured in this exhibit is the work of 37 Kentucky woodcarvers from all across the state – from Pineville to Paducah – to Louisville to Ashland. There are in-the-round free standing sculptures – wall mounted works with relief carving – walking sticks and canes that utilize the natural form of trees and roots – whittled and ingenious folk art carvings – and carvings with stylized features and realism.

Friday, March 18, 2005 When Welsh woodworker Don Weber came to Paint Lick, Kentucky, he brought a collection of hand tools, experience and knowledge about how to construct furniture using traditional British techniques. On Friday, March 25, from 10:30 am - 3:30 pm, Weber will show visitors at the Kentucky Artisan Center how to turn wood using a 12th century spring pole lathe.
