  • Erica Kirchner Uses Jeweler’s Saw to Create Animal Sculptures from Copper at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea

    Erica Kirchner will demonstrate use of the jeweler’s saw to create her copper animal sculptures on Saturday, June 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Kirchner constructs her small animals by hand from flat sheets of copper and copper tubing. The copper is cut with a jeweler’s saw, hammered, manipulated, and when necessary, assembled using solder and brazing techniques and an acetylene torch.

  • Janet Northern Creates Baskets from Honeysuckle Vines and Hickory Bark at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea

    On Saturday, June 8, Janet Northern, of Mount Vernon, will create baskets using honeysuckle vines and hickory bark from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Northern has been making baskets for 16 years and is primarily self-taught. She utilizes the wood and natural vines that she finds and gathers in the region surrounding her Rockcastle County farm to create her baskets.

  • Richard Adams to Demonstrate Woodturning on the Lathe at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea

    On Saturday, June 1, Richard Adams, of London, will demonstrate woodturning on the lathe from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Artistic and utilitarian bowls are Adams’ primary work, but he also enjoys turning hollow forms, lidded boxes, pepper and salt mills, pens and trivets.
  • Christa Smith Creates Wooden ‘Bridal Boxes’ at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea

    On Saturday, May 25, Christa Smith, of Elizabethtown, will demonstrate traditional Bavarian painted wooden bridal boxes from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Smith is one artist who is working to make painted wooden box “Bauernmalerei” treasured and collectible again. She creates round and oval painted wooden boxes and trays and beautifully decorates them with colorful images in brilliant rich colors.

    On Saturday, May 11, Sally Cammack, of Cynthiana, will demonstrate how she designs and paints gourds, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Cammack’s designs are all original, with many of the village scenes reflective of the town where she was born or the rural area where she now lives.

  • Woodturning on a Small Lathe Demonstrated by Pamela Rucker at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea

    On Saturday, May 4, Pamela Rucker, of Lancaster, will demonstrate woodturning on a small lathe from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Rucker settled on smaller lathe to create her pocket watches, magnifying glasses, bottle stoppers and letter openers. She works on a “Mini-Jet” lathe, which can handle works up to 7 inches in diameter. She will be using this same lathe in her demonstration at the Kentucky Artisan Center on May 4.
  • Exhibition: "Connected by a Thread: The Kentucky Six+"

    The exhibit “Connected by a Thread: The Kentucky Six+” is on display in the lobby of the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea through June 9, 2013. This exhibit features works by the seven members of this group who have created small wall quilts based on a challenge theme: “Working in a Series.” Each artist used her own creative style to pursue her chosen theme.

    On Saturday, March 16, three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate woodcarving techniques from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Carving that day will be John Ferguson and Will Bondurant, of Berea, and Oris Stanton of Somerset. Bondurant is known for his chip carving and Ferguson and Stanton carve figures and animals from wood.

    Melissa Oesch, of Lexington, will demonstrate recycled bookbinding techniques, using parts of old books and new materials, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Oesch refers to herself as an eco-friendly Kentucky artist and designer who handcrafts one-of-a-kind journals, sketchbooks, and other unique creations from salvaged and up-cycled materials. She is challenged by re-imagining what can be created with discarded and recycled textiles.

    The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will offer visitors free guided gallery tours through the center’s current special exhibit, “The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea: Celebrating 10 Years,” on Saturday, March 9, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. This exhibit recognizes the works of 50 Kentucky artisans who have exhibited and sold their works at the Center since it opened in July 2003. The year 2013, marks the Center’s 10th anniversary year with this special exhibition.
  • Christopher Robbins Creates Brooms at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea

    Christopher Robbins, of Berea, will demonstrate broom-making on Saturday, March 2, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Robbins makes all of his brooms totally by hand with the assistance of broom making equipment that is 100 or more years old. He uses a 100-year-old winder, constructed with wooden pegs, which is used to attach the broomcorn to the broom handle. His vice, which is used to stitch and tie the brooms, is dated Sept. 10, 1878.
  • Donna and Donnie Smith Demonstrate Gourd Artistry at Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea

    Donna and Donnie Smith, of Waco, will demonstrate their carved and painted gourds from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. The Smiths’ journey as craftspeople began 23 years ago, when they planted gourds by their back porch. Donna eventually left her full-time job, and she and her husband, Donnie, became full-time gourd artists. Their work is a partnership, with Donna decorating the gourds with images that enhance the gourds’ natural shapes. Some of the gourds become vases, as long-neck gourds are embellished with vertical images.

    On Saturday, Feb. 16, three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate woodcarving techniques from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Carving that day will be Jack Gann, of Berea, who specializes in animal carvings; Keith Flowers, of Richmond, who heads up the organization; and a new carver to the group, Josh Mink, of Berea, who is being mentored by Gann and David Buzzard.

    The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will offer visitors free guided gallery tours through the center’s current special exhibit, “The Threads That Bind: Textile Works by Kentucky Artisans,” on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. This exhibit showcases the work of 21 Kentucky artisans who create a wide range of work including clothing, jewelry, wall art, sculpture, quilts and more. Works on display are composed of fabric, fiber and/or thread, with significant use of thread or other fiber strands to weave, embellish, construct, shape, quilt or otherwise create the design.

    On Saturday, Feb. 9, Janice Harding Owens, of Mount Vernon, will demonstrate folk art painting from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. While commissioned paintings require Owens to render specific images, her own landscapes often come from her imagination. She also takes photographs of her surroundings and looks at other images for reference, often juxtaposing them in her own unique way.

The Center will be open regular hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, providing visitors with exciting possibilities for finding Kentucky-made gifts.
