Patton of Owensboro receives KY Human Rights Unbridled Spirit for Justice Award
OWENSBORO – Alma Randolph Patton of Owensboro, Ky., is one of the first three recipients of the new Kentucky Commission on Human Rights Unbridled Spirit of Justice Award.
Patton, the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights Commissioner of the 2nd Supreme Court District, received the award last Thursday, April 16, in Owensboro where the commission met to hear and rule on discrimination complaints for the people of Kentucky.
The award recognizes Patton for her work toward equality, social justice for all people and toward making Kentucky a better place to live. She is also the founder of the Alma Randolph Charitable Foundation Inc., since 1993. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to provide new back-to-school clothing for disadvantaged children. The human rights commission chair, George Stinson of Louisville, recently appointed Thomas as co-chair of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights 50th anniversary celebration, which will take place in 2010.
“Kentucky’s unbridled sprit for justice is reflected by those foot soldiers who stand in the gap, performing necessary, basic, and often mundane tasks, without whom the battle could not be fought nor the victory won,” the award states.
The other award recipients were Kentucky Human Rights Commissioner Timothy Thomas of Madisonville and David Kelly, executive director of the Owensboro Human Relations Commission.
The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights is the state government agency that enforces the Kentucky Civil Rights Act and federal civil rights laws.
