Kentucky Human Rights Commission to meet this week at Murray State University
MURRAY, KENTUCKY (MAY 17, 2011) – The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights Board of Commissioners will meet to rule on discrimination complaints at 9:30 a.m. (Central Daylight Time), Thursday, May 19. The meeting is open to the public and will be held at Murray State University in the Curris Center Mississippi Room located at 102 Curris Center in Murray, Ky., 40271.
The board is expected to rule on 19 discrimination complaints made by people in Kentucky. The meeting will include guest speakers Dr. Randy J. Dunn, president of Murray State University, S. G. Carthell, director of Multi-Cultural Affairs and chair of the Murray Human Rights Commission, Roslyn White of the university’s African American Recruitment Department, and Jody Cofer, program specialist for Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity at the university.
The commission usually holds its monthly meetings at its Louisville headquarters. On occasion, the commission meets as budget allows in other regions of the state to raise the public's awareness of civil rights and to demonstrate the state agency's function to enforce the Kentucky Civil Rights Act and federal civil rights laws for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
The Kentucky Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on the protected classes of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, familial status, and tobacco-smoking status. The classes are protected with varying stipulations in the areas of employment, public accommodations, housing, and financial transactions. The commission also has authority to investigate private club membership for discrimination under the Kentucky tax code. Members of clubs found to discriminate in their membership are prohibited from taking certain tax deductions
