Kentucky Human Rights Commissioner Ann Newman, who is chair of the NAACP of Boyd and Greenup counties in Kentucky, has helped to organize Martin Luther King Holiday events in her region. The events will take place on Jan. 15 and Jan. 16 in Ashland, Ky. Commissioner Newman represents the 7th Kentucky Supreme Court District on the Human Rights Commission Board, which includes Ashland and the surrounding area.
Jan. 15, 2012 – at 7 p.m., Kelva Nelson, who has taught at Crabbe Elementary School in Ashland for 29 years, will speak at a community service sponsored by the Ashland Area Ministerial Association at New Hope Baptist Church, 2717 Carter Avenue.
Jan. 16, 2012 – at 10:30 a.m., The Rev. Ike Nicholson, pastor of First Christian Church in Ashland, will be the featured speaker at Monday’s Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Service at the historic St. James AME Church at 333 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
The service, sponsored by the Boyd & Greenup NAACP, will conclude with the Poor Man March from the front of St. James Church on Carter Avenue to the Fellowship Hall of First Presbyterian Church on Judd Plaza, where a free lunch will be served by the church.
The annual service at the historic black church is “something I look forward to every year,” Commissioner Newman told the Ashland Independent Newspaper on Jan. 11. “We always have good participation from local leaders and from a good cross-section of the community,” Newman said.
