KHS, Frankfort Businesses Send Holiday Wishes to Military
Frankfort, Ky. (December 3, 2009)— The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) and other Frankfort businesses and organizations are sending holiday cheer to deployed military personnel this year—and the project has resulted in more than just wishful thinking.
Working in partnership with Military Missions Inc, a nonprofit group in Lexington, KHS organized the project, including distributing decorated collection boxes to various collection sites in Frankfort. Suggested donations included travel games, cards, books, gift cards redeemable online and Kentucky-related gifts. In total, the month-long project produced more than 15 large boxes filled with small gift items to be added to care packages, which Military Missions will compile and distribute in December.
KHS began the project as part of the organization’s Candlelight Tour activities.
“With the opening of our ‘Kentucky Military Treasures’ exhibition during Candlelight Tour, this project was a natural fit for us,” said Kent Whitworth, KHS executive director. “While the exhibition honors veterans, the care package project is one small way KHS can show appreciation for active military personnel. We appreciate the tremendous support of local organizations and businesses, which helped make this project a success.”
Collection sites included the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, Commonwealth Credit Union locations, Whitaker Bank locations, Frankfort YMCA locations, the Paul Sawyier Public Library, the Frankfort-Franklin County Tourist & Convention Commission, Poor Richards Books, Mitchell’s Clothing Store, Howell Chiropractic Center, Completely Kentucky, Miss P’s Kids and some state government offices, including the Capital Plaza Tower, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet building, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, the Department for Environmental Protection, the Division of Water, the Capitol Building and the Capitol Annex.
Collection boxes were donated by Rumpke and decorated by local students from the King Center, the Paul Sawyier Public Library, Western Hills High School and Franklin County High School.
