KHS to Host Junior Historical Society Rallies This Fall
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 14, 2010)—This fall, the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) is offering parents, teachers and students an opportunity to cultivate a love for history. KHS will host seven rallies, beginning in late October, for members of the Kentucky Junior Historical Society (KJHS).
KJHS, in cooperation with Kentucky History Day, is a membership program that connects youth ages five to 18 to Kentucky’s unique past. KJHS members can participate in activities, academic competitions and service projects throughout the school year and summer. Activities are designed to increase members’ understanding of and appreciation for how history can be used to build strong communities, improve quality of life, develop sound and objective public policy, and develop and inspire the next generation of Kentucky’s leadership.
Fall rallies offer KJHS chapters a chance to meet with KHS staff and other chapters in their region, review changes to the KJHS program and explore local historical resources from institutions within each region. The 2011 Fall Rally schedule includes the following dates and locations:
- Oct. 20: Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College in Cumberland, Ky.
- Oct. 23: Frazier International History Museum in Louisville, Ky.
- Oct. 27: Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort, Ky.
- Nov. 5: Western Kentucky University Kentucky Library and Museum in Bowling Green, Ky.
- Nov.13: Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky.
- Nov.16: Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky.
- Nov. 30: Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Ky.
Children and teens may participate in KJHS as individuals or in chapter groups. Chapters may be organized at the school level; as a home school group; in association with a scout troop or 4-H chapter, local library, or historical society; or as a family of at least three children. KJHS members receive a variety of membership benefits, including membership publications and free or reduced admission to the KHS history campus and at Kentucky State Parks and historic sites.
