KHS Film Series to Show “Big Lever: Party Politics in Leslie County, Kentucky” on Dec. 9
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Dec. 2, 2010)— The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) will show “Big Lever: Party Politics in Leslie County, Kentucky” at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9 at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in downtown Frankfort.
“Big Lever” is a documentary film depicting Richard Nixon’s 1978 trip to Leslie County. Nixon chose this small mountain area for his first public appearance after he resigned as president. The film includes original footage of the visit to Leslie County and explores the machinations of party politics in this rural and staunchly Republican county.
The film has been reviewed as “powerfully telling…thoroughly engrossing…a microcosm of U.S. political tactics—both legal and illicit,” by Booklist. Irby Brown, professor of English and Film at the University of Richmond called it “The best comment I have ever seen on Watergate. It explains how deeply corruption is engrained in the political life of America. A terrifyingly real film.”
“Big Lever” was a finalist in the American Film Fesitival and an award winner at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and won a gold award from the Houston International Film Festival and an honorable mention from the San Francisco International Film Festival.
Tickets to the film series are $4 for KHS members and $8 for all other guests. Admission to the films includes popcorn, soda and entrance to the KHS history campus. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
