Appalachia is Focus of Upcoming Presentation
Ronald D. Eller, professor of history at the University of Kentucky and former director of the Appalachian Center will speak about his recent book, “Uneven Ground: Appalachia Since 1945,” at noon on Wednesday, March 3 at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort. The talk is presented by the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) as part of its History Speaks! program and is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow.
Eller’s presentation, “Rich Land, Poor People: Progress, Development and the American Dream in Appalachia Since 1945,” challenges stereotypes about Appalachia while exploring the environmental and human consequences of development. His recent book, “Uneven Ground,” won two awards in 2009, including the V.O. Key Award for outstanding book on Southern politics and the Weatherford Award for Nonfiction.
“In this sincerely passionate and thoroughly informed book, Eller demonstrates why we should care deeply about a region where the tragic consequences of our national failure to acknowledge the critical distinctions between ‘development’ and ‘progress’ are so dramatically revealed,” wrote James C. Cobb, Spalding Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Georgia, in a review of Eller’s book.
History Speaks! is part of the KHS Highlighting History series. Visitors are invited to bring their own lunches and enjoy a complimentary dessert.
