Vietnam Oral History Project Wins 2011 Kentucky History Award from KHS
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 22, 2011) – The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) honored outstanding achievements in the field of Kentucky history at the 2011 Kentucky History Celebration on Nov. 11 at the Old State Capitol in downtown Frankfort.
Among this year’s winners was the Vietnam Oral History Project, recipient of the Class A Education Award for “Tieng Noi Luu Vong: Moving Voices from Vietnam.” The project was nominated by David Harryman of Crane House, The Asia Institute Inc.
The Crane House, the Asia Institute Inc. and volunteers from Louisville’s Vietnamese community initially began this project as an exhibit about post-Vietnam War Vietnamese lives in Louisville. What resulted was the Vietnam Oral History Project Exhibit, which works to record and preserve the stories of Vietnam War veterans and the local Vietnamese community in Louisville.
This project conducted interviews and recorded stories from veterans, refugees, Amerasians, scholars and second-generation Vietnamese-Americans. As the exhibit website explains, “From the stories, photographs and artifacts, we have uncovered untold tragic stories of war and also success stories of Vietnamese-Americans who attribute their accomplishments to those who fought valiantly in the War.” For Louisville’s Vietnamese community, this exhibit created a deserved moment of attention from the broader community. Their work to capture more of this history continues today.
The Kentucky History Awards program, presented annually by KHS, recognizes exceptional achievements in Kentucky history by individuals, business and civic leaders, communities, museums and history organizations throughout the Commonwealth. The program also honors individuals and groups that have demonstrated efforts to promote the preservation, awareness and appreciation of state and local history.
