Phillip Seyfrit Wins 2011 Kentucky History Award from KHS
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 23, 2011) – The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) honored outstanding achievements in the field of Kentucky history at the 2011 Kentucky History Celebration on Nov. 11 at the Old State Capitol in downtown Frankfort.
Among this year’s winners was Phillip Seyfrit, director of Madison County Historical Properties. Seyfrit received the Frank R. Levstik Award for Professional Service. He was recognized for his work in managing Madison County Battlefield Park and in assisting in with the development of its visitor center. Seyfrit has coordinated events at the park, including the annual Battle of Richmond reenactment in late August and the living history event held for students each May. He has also written successful grant applications for the Richmond battlefield, helping to secure funding for the park and to restore its historic buildings. In addition, Seyfrit serves on the state’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission.
The Frank R. Levstik Award for Professional Service is presented each year to a current or recently retired paid staff member of a museum, historical society, genealogical society or other history-related organization in the state. The individual selected must have shown exemplary work and dedication to the institution and have been instrumental in raising the overall excellence and professionalism of that organization.
The Kentucky History Awards program, presented annually by KHS, recognizes exceptional achievements in Kentucky history by individuals, business and civic leaders, communities, museums and history organizations throughout the Commonwealth. The program also honors individuals and groups that have demonstrated efforts to promote the preservation, awareness and appreciation of state and local history.
