Louisville Water Company Wins 2011 Kentucky History Award from KHS
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 22, 2011) – The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) honored outstanding achievements in the field of Kentucky history at the 2011 Kentucky History Celebration on Nov. 11 at the Old State Capitol in downtown Frankfort.
Among this year’s winners was the Louisville Water Company, recipient of the Class D Education Award for the “Water Works: 150 Years of Louisville Water Company” exhibit at the Frazier International History Museum.
The Louisville Water Company began operations in October 1860 as Kentucky’s first public water provider. Its recent 150th anniversary and the fact that water is so closely tied to Louisville’s history provided the company with the opportunity to show how water works in Louisville through an exhibit in partnership with the Frazier History Museum. This exhibit showcased the water company’s broad archival holdings as well as artifacts from its history, including a wooden pipe from the original water system, meter boxes, hundreds of photographs, and original drawings dating to 1858. With more than 19,000 visitors, the project has spurred plans for the Louisville Water Company to create its own Water Works Museum.
The Kentucky History Awards program, presented annually by KHS, recognizes exceptional achievements in Kentucky history by individuals, business and civic leaders, communities, museums and history organizations throughout the Commonwealth. The program also honors individuals and groups that have demonstrated efforts to promote the preservation, awareness and appreciation of state and local history.
