Kentucky Society Daughters of the American Revolution Wins 2011 Kentucky History Awards from KHS
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 22, 2011) – The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) honored outstanding achievements in the field of Kentucky history at the 2011 Kentucky History Celebration on Nov. 11 at the Old State Capitol in downtown Frankfort.
Among this year’s winners was the Kentucky Society Daughters of the American Revolution (KSDAR), recipient of the Class E Education Award for the “Duncan Tavern Historic Center Restoration Project” And the Class E Publication Award for the Duncan Tavern Historic Center website.
Kentucky was still part of Virginia when Revolutionary War veteran Maj. Joseph Duncan built his Georgian-style home in Hopewell, Ky., in 1788. Although the town’s name is now Paris, Duncan’s magnificent home remains intact thanks to the efforts of the Kentucky Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A Kentucky State Historic Landmark that is on the National Register of Historic Places, the structure was saved from being razed in 1940 when the KSDAR purchased the building for one dollar from the City of Paris. Today, the building serves as the state DAR headquarters. The restoration of the building took 12 years and nearly three-quarters of a million dollars to complete. Today, the building stands preserved as a working monument to Kentucky’s pioneer and settlement history.
To promote the newly-restored Duncan Tavern Historic Center, the KSDAR designed its first website in 2010. This website contains state-of-the-art designs and has attracted the attention of tourists from all over the nation. The website offers views of the house museum and its collection, the John Fox Jr. Genealogical Library, information about the history of Duncan Tavern and pertinent visitor information.
The Kentucky History Awards program, presented annually by KHS, recognizes exceptional achievements in Kentucky history by individuals, business and civic leaders, communities, museums and history organizations throughout the Commonwealth. The program also honors individuals and groups that have demonstrated efforts to promote the preservation, awareness and appreciation of state and local history.
