Gov. Beshear Unveils Peter Williams Print as 2015 Derby Poster
Commemorative poster now available for purchase
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Steve Beshear today unveiled the 2015 Governor’s Commemorative Derby poster, a print by New Zealand artist Peter Williams. The image, titled “The Cat That Licked the Cream,” is a reproduction of William’s original oil on canvas and depicts a colorful pre-race scene in the Churchill Downs paddock.
“I am honored to once again have the privilege of unveiling the Governor’s Commemorative Derby poster,” said Gov. Beshear. “This year’s print shows Churchill Downs and its iconic twin spires from a different perspective – a view from the paddock – yet still captures the beauty and excitement of race day. Derby fans will be thrilled to add this Peter Williams print to their collections.”
Peter Williams is known for his nearly 30 years of painting in the paddocks of Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Saratoga and other world-renowned racetracks. He paints scenes as they happen and is fond of those who stop by to watch and talk to him as he works. Williams’ paintings, always in oil, possess an easily recognizable, unique style that exemplifies his love of racing, sense of humor and artistic skill.
The commemorative “The Cat That Licked the Cream” poster is available for purchase online at the Governor’s Derby Celebration website at http://governor.ky.gov/derbycelebration/. The $15 poster will also be available for purchase at the Governor’s Downtown Derby Celebration on Derby morning.
