SOAR Strategy Summit Agenda Features Top State, Federal Leaders

Registration open for Feb. 16 summit in Pikeville

FRANKFORT, Ky.Building on the success of the first SOAR (Shaping Our Appalachian Region) summit held just over one year ago, the upcoming “strategy summit” features an agenda that includes the U.S. labor secretary and the head of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Topics include sessions on working with federal partners and translating broadband into economic success. U.S. Labor Secretary Thomas E. Perez and Michael Botticelli, acting director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, are scheduled to speak to participants.

The daylong summit Feb. 16 at the East Kentucky Exposition Center in Pikeville begins with registration at 8 a.m. and an opening session at 9.

Registration is available online for $10 until Wednesday, Feb. 11; on-site registration is $15. A full summit agenda for Creating Our Future: Regional Strategies for Growth and Development is below, and is also available on the SOAR website, soar-ky.org.

Gov. Steve Beshear and U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers began the SOAR initiative in late 2013 to address economic issues in the region, build on strengths and find community-generated solutions to chronic challenges. Breakout sessions will offer participants information on tourism as an economic driver, recruiting industry and building entrepreneurship, coding, local food, community health and much more.

About SOAR

The SOAR initiative was launched by Gov. Beshear and Rep. Rogers in late 2013, after a stunning downturn in the coal market exacerbated historic challenges in eastern Kentucky related to unemployment and poverty. More than 1,700 Kentuckians attended a one-day SOAR summit in Pikeville in December 2013. SOAR has helped the region develop and put into action new locally-oriented strategies to attack persistent challenges.
