Gov. Beshear proclaims Saturday “Battle of the Bluegrass Day”
FRANKFORT, Ky.– Gov. Steve Beshear today proclaimed Saturday, March 31, as “Battle of the Bluegrass Day,” in recognition of the basketball game that will determine which Kentucky team will play for the NCAA championship.
“For the first time in the history of the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament, the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the University of Louisville Cardinals will compete in a pivotal Final Four game in which one team will advance to play for the 2012 National Championship,” the proclamation reads.
The proclamation notes that the “eyes of the world will be watching,” and “Kentuckians take great pride in knowing that either the CATS or the CARDS will not only play for, but will win, the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship on Monday, April 2, 2012.”
Kentucky has a longstanding tradition of basketball tournament success, with the Kentucky Wildcats having won seven previous national titles and the Louisville Cardinals having won the title twice. The proclamation also notes that Western Kentucky University and Murray State University competed in the 2012 men’s tournament, while the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville women’s teams participated in the women’s tournament.
