Funds to Support On-farm Investments in Boone and Kenton Counties

BURLINGTON, Ky.– Gov. Steve Beshear today presented  ceremonial checks to the Northern Kentucky Cattle Association and the Kenton County Farm Bureau from the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund (KADF) to support Kentucky’s agriculture and rural economy.  Gov. Beshear, who chairs the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board, presented the checks to the two organizations to provide cost-share for on-farm improvements through the County Agricultural Investment Program (CAIP).

“As Governor, I am proud and honored to serve as chairman of the Agricultural Development Board, because I know the importance of this fund to the future of our farmers,” said Gov. Beshear. “I am committed to creating opportunities that will make Kentucky’s agricultural community stronger.  This Agricultural Development Fund program plays an integral role in achieving that goal for farm families in Boone and Kenton counties.”

To date, more than $340 million from the KADF has been invested in an array of state, regional and county projects throughout the Commonwealth.  Over the last decade, Boone County has invested nearly $2 million dollars and Kenton County has invested more than $730,000 in county agricultural development funds.

“CAIP investments on our family farms in Boone and Kenton counties and across the Commonwealth continue to be vital to the growth and reshaping of Kentucky agriculture, as well as stimulating local economies,” said GOAP Executive Director Roger Thomas.

CAIP is designed to provide farmers with incentives to allow them to improve current production practices and assist in diversifying farming operations.  CAIP provides 11 investment areas from which producers may choose.  Within the 11 investment areas a wide variety of agricultural enterprises are available.  Boone and Kenton counties are two of 105 counties that have offered this program to their producers.

Boone County will hold a producer meeting Thursday, April 21 for Boone County farmers, which will be the start of their application period.  For more information about this meeting or the program in Boone County, contact John Terlau with the cattle association at (859) 384-7007.

For more information about the program in Kenton County, contact Dan Allen, extension agent for agriculture, at (859) 356-3155.  Note:  Kenton County has completed their application period for the current program.
