FRANKFORT, Ky.– Nominations are now being accepted for the 2010 Governor’s Awards for Volunteerism and Service, which honor groups and individuals who strive to improve the Commonwealth through volunteer efforts.

“We seldom celebrate the people who sacrifice so much for the benefit of others,” Gov. Steve Beshear said. “These awards allow us to spotlight the compassion and selflessness of the Kentuckians who confront so many of the challenges and barriers affecting their neighbors.”

To honor these individuals, the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service (KCCVS), an agency of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, is now accepting nominations for the 2010 Governor’s Awards for Volunteerism and Service.

This is the 16th year for the annual volunteer awards. KCCVS hosts a special ceremony each spring to publicly honor the winners and others who have given back to their communities by volunteering.

KCCVS Executive Director Eileen Cackowski said volunteers are vital to their communities.

“Particularly when governments and charitable groups are feeling an economic pinch, volunteers are more important than ever,” she said. “They really embody the spirit of giving across Kentucky, and the Governor’s Volunteer Awards put the focus on them and their valuable contributions.”

The award nomination deadline is Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011. Nominations for most awards must focus on service activities completed in Kentucky during 2010. Individuals and groups may be nominated in only one category, and self-nominations are accepted.

A new category this year, the First Lady’s Award, recognizes a Kentuckian who has gone out of his or her way to assist youth in their efforts to graduate from high school. This may have been done through mentoring, time spent tutoring, advising a student in need of assistance or by working directly with a school to help youth earn their diplomas.

Award winners from the previous five years are ineligible for the 2010 awards. A panel of distinguished judges reviews and scores nomination applications.

Electronic submission is encouraged. Find nomination applications, category criteria and more information online at KCCVS’ website: http://chfs.ky.gov/dfrcvs/kccvs/govawards/.
