FRANKFORT, Ky.– Gov. Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010 in honor of Brigadier General Kenneth R. Fleenor, who passed away Dec. 11. 

Brig. Gen. Fleenor was a native of Bowling Green, Ky. and a graduate of Western Kentucky University (WKU).  After graduation, he entered the United States Air Force and in December 1967, during his 87th combat mission over North Vietnam, his fighter plane was shot down and he was held as a Prisoner of War in Hanoi for more than five years.  He retired in 1980 in the rank of Brigadier General.

Among Brig. Gen. Fleenor’s many decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Flying Cross.  In 1997, he was also selected as a member of WKU’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni.

Funeral services for Brig. Gen. Fleenor will held on Dec. 14 in Texas.  Gov. Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset that day.  Gov. Beshear encourages individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in this tribute.
