FRANKFORT, Ky.– In an effort to support families in need during the holiday season, Governor Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear will be holding a Governor’s Holiday Food Drive from Nov. 15 – Dec. 17, 2010.

“During these trying economic times, we must remember those less fortunate and in need of everyday items that many of us take for granted,” said Gov. Beshear.  “Jane and I encourage state employees and visitors to the Capitol and other participating state office buildings, to take part in this year’s food drive.”

The Governor’s Holiday Food Drive kicks off in conjunction with Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week in Kentucky, Nov. 14-20, 2010.

“No child should go to sleep hungry,” said Mrs. Beshear.  “Every non-perishable good we can get to a family in need will ease the choices many Kentucky families have to make between food, rent and other expenses.”

Throughout the month-long drive, collection bins for canned goods and non-perishable food items will be set up in six state office buildings including outside the Governor’s office in the Capitol. Other participating buildings include the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the Department for Libraries and Archives, State Central Lab, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services and the State Office Building.

All donations will be equally divided between two local Franklin County food banks – Access Soup Kitchen and the Franklin County Women’s Shelter, both of which are currently serving at full capacity.
