FRANKFORT, Ky. – Gov. Steve Beshear today announced the award of more than $5.56 million in federal grants to programs that support victims’ services, including domestic violence shelters, children’s advocacy centers and rape crisis centers.

The 62 awards were made through the federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), which relies on criminal fines, forfeitures and assessments instead of taxpayer dollars to support victim services.

“These grants will ensure the continuation of vital services for some of the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable citizens – victims of violent crime,” said Gov. Steve Beshear.  “By providing crisis intervention, advocacy, counseling, shelter and other assistance at a time when they need it most, these programs help victims navigate the criminal justice system, and begin the healing process.”

Among the awards is $107,100 to Exploited Children’s Help Organization (ECHO), which provides crisis intervention, support and referrals through the social service, mental health and criminal justice systems for child victims and their families.

In addition, Christian Appalachian’s $83,000 award will allow the agency, the 15th largest human services charity in the nation , to provide emergency services to victims of domestic violence and marital rape in the Appalachian region.

“Our goal is to help as many crime victims as we can, as much as we can,” Gov. Beshear added.  “We are reaching out to victims, to help them get their life back in order.”
