Governor Beshear announces awarding of contract to widen section of Interstate 65 in Edmonson, Barren counties
Making I-65 safer, more efficient is ‘absolute priority,’ Governor says
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Gov. Steve Beshear today announced the awarding of a nearly $39 million contract to widen to six lanes a 4.6-mile section of Interstate 65 in Edmonson and Barren counties.
The project is part of a larger plan to widen – and make safer – one of Kentucky’s busiest and most important corridors in its entirety – from the Tennessee border to the Ohio River.
“Improving the efficiency and safety of I-65 is an absolute priority of my administration,” said Gov. Beshear, under whom several sections of I-65 have meantime been fitted with median cable barriers and temporary concrete barriers to reduce the potential for “crossover” crashes.
“While temporary barriers provide an additional safeguard, they are not the ultimate solution,” Gov. Beshear said. “I am committed to working with our legislative and community leaders to make sure that completing the widening of I-65 remains a priority.”
Scotty’s Contracting and Stone LLC, of Glasgow, submitted the low bid of $38,987,459 for the contract.
One end of the project area is in Edmonson County at the overpass for KY 1339 – Fairview Church Road – and just north of the interchange of I-65 and the Louie B. Nunn Cumberland Parkway. The other end of the project area is in Barren County, six-tenths of a mile north of the interchange of I-65 and KY 255 – the Mammoth Cave Parkway.
