LAGRANGE, Ky.– Gov. Steve Beshear today announced a community development grant to Oldham County Fiscal Court. Department for Local Government (DLG) Commissioner Tony Wilder presented the check to local officials in LaGrange.

A $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) administered by the DLG will support the construction of a new Cedar Lake Center, an adult daycare facility, in LaGrange.

“With a client base and staff that have more than tripled in three years, the Cedar Lake Foundation is very much in need of a larger facility,” said Gov. Beshear. “This grant will provide a bigger space that will allow Cedar Lake to increase its clientele by 50 additional participants. It will also provide jobs and expand programming by accommodating more full-time staff.”

The Cedar Lake Foundation has outgrown its current facility, which was designed in 2006 to serve only 10 handicapped adults and employ three full-time staff members. In three years, Cedar Lake has more than tripled the amount of adults it serves. Today the center provides adult daycare services to 37 adults, with another 50 persons on the waiting list. Cedar Lake currently has six full-time staff members, with an additional four volunteers that assist the center on a weekly basis. The existing building does not allow Cedar Lake to adequately provide all of the services needed for the adult daycare clientele due to lack of mobility and privacy issues.

The Oldham County Fiscal Court, in partnership with the Cedar Lake Foundation Inc., will construct a new 8,000 square-foot adult daycare center to assist mentally and physically handicapped adults. The facility will offer vocational programs, pet therapy programs and education courses. Other programs will include adult daily living skills courses, health and wellness courses and reading groups. The new building will be fully Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible and will have a modern updated fire suppression system. The Cedar Lake Foundation Inc. will own and operate the facility.

“Providing adults with disabilities increased access to needed services and additional educational opportunities enhances the quality of life not only for the clients of Cedar Lake but for the entire community,” said DLG Commissioner Tony Wilder. “We are honored to be a part of providing these much-needed grant funds to make this facility a reality.”

The CDBG funding will supplement private funding from the Cedar Lake Foundation for a total project cost of more than $1.5 million.

“Cedar Lake Lodge has a tremendous reputation and history for caring for our most fragile populations,” said Sen. Ernie Harris, of Crestwood. “This grant will enable them to continue providing excellent care to a growing clientele.”

“Cedar Lake has an outstanding reputation when it comes to caring for our most vulnerable citizens,” said Rep. Rick Rand, of Bedford. “In partnering with state government, it will be able to use this grant in a way that will protect the dignity of those they serve for years to come. I’m really pleased to see this expansion become a reality.”

The state’s CDBG program is administered by DLG and funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Kentucky’s Congressional leaders’ ongoing support of the CDBG program ensures the availability of continued funding in Kentucky and nationally.
