Joins Kentucky Coal Academy in promoting coal mine safety

FRANKFORT, Ky.-- Coal mine safety received added emphasis from Gov. Steve Beshear and the Kentucky Coal Academy during a proclamation signing at the Capitol in Frankfort today. On behalf of Gov. Beshear, Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Len Peters presented the proclamation to the Academy which launched a campaign to promote mine safety.

“Kentucky Coal Mine Safety Month is being recognized in order to bring increased focus to the ongoing efforts of this administration to make sure anyone who works above or below ground at a Kentucky coal mine does so in a safe environment,” said Gov. Beshear. “One accident, injury or fatality is one too many, and we urge coal operators and the miners who work for them to be even more aware of the dangers that can bring about preventable accidents.”

The Kentucky Coal Academy’s campaign, “Bring them Home Safe!” will involve television public service announcements as well as posters and fliers to be made available to mine operators and organizations throughout Kentucky coal fields.

“I’d like to commend the Kentucky Coal Academy on this mine safety awareness initiative. It complements the activities the Energy and Environment Cabinet’s Office of Mine Safety and Licensing has taken to make sure   safety is continually addressed by coal operators and miners,” said Sec. Peters. “We want to make certain this campaign slogan is also a way of life for Kentucky miners.”

Five miners have died as the result of accidents in Kentucky in 2010.
