Gov. Beshear requests Presidential disaster declaration after flash floods
FRANKFORT, Ky.—Gov. Steve Beshear today asked President Obama to declare a major disaster for Pike County as a result of the severe storms and flooding that struck the state this week. Damage assessments in Shelby County will begin tomorrow.
Early Sunday morning, Pike County was struck by flash floods and Shelby County experienced downed trees and power outages caused by heavy winds, as well as flooding. Two fatalities in Pike County have been attributed to flooding.
Gov. Beshear’s request sent to the President today is for public assistance and individual assistance, including disaster housing, Individual and Household Program, disaster unemployment assistance and small business administration disaster loans.
“I will be reaching out to the White House and our congressional delegation to expedite this request as quickly as possible,” said Gov. Beshear.
