Vetoes budget language to give maximum flexibility in implementing austere budget passed by General Assembly

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Governor Steve Beshear today took final action on legislation passed by the General Assembly during last week’s special session, which provided a biennial Executive Branch spending plan for FY2010-2012.

“This budget passed by the General Assembly is not what I wanted, and not what I originally proposed,” Gov. Beshear said.  “However, it is better than having to shut down state government, and I will work hard to minimize its impact on Kentucky families.”

Gov. Beshear vetoed provisions in the budget bill passed by the General Assembly that would restrict his ability to implement the cuts required by it.  “My administration must have maximum flexibility to manage state government through these extremely difficult times, while continuing to provide essential services to our people.”

Gov. Beshear took final action on:

  • House Bill 1, the Executive Branch Budget;
  • House Bill 2, a related revenue measure;
  • House Bill 3, the Transportation Cabinet budget;
  • House Bill 4, the Road Plan;
  • House Bill 5, legislation to address problems with the state’s unemployment insurance fund system; and
  • Senate Bill 5, a technical amendment to House Bill 1 addressing Category Five schools.
