Governor Beshear Orders Flags to Half-staff on June 5

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Gov. Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on Saturday, June 5, 2010 in honor of a Fort Campbell soldier who died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

According to the Department of Defense, Pfc. Christopher R. Barton, 22, of Concord, N.C., died May 24 in Khowst province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.  He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

Funeral services for Pfc. Barton will be held June 5 at Idlewild Baptist Church in Matthews, N.C.  Burial services will immediately follow at Harrisburg Presbyterian Church. Gov. Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset that day.
