COVINGTON, Ky. – Gov. Steve Beshear today recognized law enforcement officers from the Northern Kentucky region who lost their lives in the line of duty, and paid tribute to the men and women who continue to put their lives on the line for others every day.

“There is much in the role of a law enforcement officer that changes over the years,” Gov. Beshear said, echoing the words on the Northern Kentucky Police Memorial. “Two factors remain constant: A dedication to service, and a willingness to make whatever sacrifices are necessary.”

The ceremony was held in conjunction with National Law Enforcement Memorial Week and comes two weeks after Lexington police officer Bryan Durman was killed while responding to a complaint.  Officer Durman was the first Kentucky officer killed in the line of duty in more than two years.

Speaking beside the black granite memorial bearing the names of 35 fallen officers from the area, Gov. Beshear noted that officers know every day they put on their uniform and go to work could be their last – but they go to work anyway.

“Every officer across this Commonwealth chooses to leave their families each day not knowing if they will return home at the end of their shifts,” Gov. Beshear said, “knowing all too well that some of their peers across the state haven’t gone home.

“They make the choice to face these challenges that law-abiding citizens hope never to face.”

“We are honored to have Governor Beshear join us in remembering officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others,” said Florence Police Chief Tim Szurlinski, president of the Northern Kentucky Police Chiefs Association. “And we appreciate his continued support as a strong advocate for law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day.”
