Governor announces availability of signed, limited-edition 2010 Governor’s Derby Poster
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Gov. Steve Beshear today announced the availability of a limited-edition version of the 2010 Governor’s Derby Poster for sale.
Steve Cauthen, the jockey who rode Affirmed to victory in the Triple Crown, signed approximately 100 Derby posters that are available for $20. Cauthen is the most recent Triple Crown winning jockey.
“Bearing the signature of celebrated jockey and Kentucky native Steve Cauthen, the Derby poster is a tribute not only to Affirmed, but to Steve and his accomplishments,” said Gov. Beshear. “This special memento is emblematic of the tradition and spirit of the Kentucky Derby.”
In honor of the 32nd anniversary of Affirmed’s victories in the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown in 1978, this year’s Derby poster features an image of the champion racehorse crossing the finish line. The painting of Affirmed featured in the poster was created by renowned artist LeRoy Neiman and is housed at the International Museum of the Horse at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Made of 50 percent recycled paper, the poster is the third in a series honoring Triple Crown winning thoroughbreds.
A portion of the proceeds of the Governor’s Derby poster will benefit First Lady Jane Beshear’s Horses and Hope program and the Equine Health and Welfare Alliance Inc. Horses and Hope provides breast cancer education, awareness, screening and treatment referral to uninsured and underinsured employees of Kentucky’s thoroughbred industry. The Equine Health and Welfare Alliance Inc. directly supports efforts addressing equine health and safety in the Commonwealth.
The signed, limited-edition posters will be available for purchase at the Governor’s Office until Derby morning and at the Governor’s Derby Celebration on May 1 at the Capitol grounds.
