Metcalf and Norton selected as young scientific leaders in the Class of 2010
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Steve Beshear today announced that Stephen Arthur Metcalf and Benjamin Daniel Norton have been selected as the two most promising young scientific leaders in Kentucky’s 2010 high school graduating class.
At the invitation of Governor Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, they will participate as delegates in the 47th year of the National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) held near the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank, W. Va.
Metcalf is a student at Paul G. Blazer High School and is from Ashland. He serves as senior class president in addition to participating on the Paul G. Blazer tennis team. He has also served two terms as president of the Environmental Science Club. Metcalf was a 2009 Governor’s Scholar on the Centre College campus.
Norton is a student at Oldham County High School and is from Smithfield. He serves as captain of the varsity academic team, is president of the Science Club and also is creator and president of the Philosophy Club. Norton was a 2009 Governor’s Scholar on the Bellarmine University campus.
Established in 1963 as a part of West Virginia’s Centennial Celebration, the NYSC is an annual summer forum where two delegates from each state exchange ideas with leading scientists and other professionals from academic and corporate worlds. Scientists from across the U.S. present lectures and hands-on research projects. These scientists work on some of the most provocative topics in science today - such as fractal geometry, the human genome project, global climate change, the history of the universe, the fate of our rainforests and robotics.
Delegates to the NYSC are challenged to explore new areas in the biological and physical sciences, art and music with resident staff members. Delegates also present seminars covering their own areas of research and interest.
The NYSC’s diverse academic program is complemented by an outdoor recreation program, which leverages the science camp’s location in the Monongahela National Forest. The camp’s outdoor program offers backpacking, caving, rock climbing, mountain biking and kayaking.
The camp takes place in Charleston from June 29 through July 23, 2010. The National Youth Science Foundation®, based in Charleston, W. Va. covers all expenses, including travel. More information is available online at www.nysf.com and www.nysc.org.
