GREENUP, Ky. – Gov. Steve Beshear joined with Department for Local Government Commissioner Tony Wilder today to announce a Community Block Development Grant (CBDG) to the city of Greenup that will assist in infrastructure development for the city and county.

The grant, totaling $885,000, allows for the extension of Greenup water lines. The grant will go toward funding the design and construction of approximately 26 miles of 6”, 4” and 3” waterlines and related appurtenances, as well as a 115,000 gallon water storage tank and booster pump station.

“All Kentuckians—regardless of where they live—must have access to a constant source of clean, usable, potable water,” said Gov. Beshear. “The CBDG grant will ensure over 300 Greenup residents currently without a reliable water source will now have the necessary resource they need.”

Currently, residents in the area that will be helped by the extensions have poor water quality and limited quantity. Fifty-four percent of surveyed households report their wells regularly go dry and 57 percent report having been without water, often for weeks at a time.  Most report that their water has poor taste or color and 36 percent report they do laundry outside their homes at an average cost of more than $10 per week.  Nearly 18 percent indicate they do not drink from their wells or cisterns, relying instead on expensive bottled water for drinking and cooking.  Many boil their water and/or use filters, softeners or bleach to make it more palatable.

“Clean, reliable water and the infrastructure to ensure availability to our citizens is a legislative priority. I am thankful to be in a position to help Greenup County expand and improve these services,” said Sen. Robin Webb.

“My thanks goes out to the city of Greenup for expanding their water system to people who needed a reliable water source,” said Rep. Tanya Pullin.
