Impacted Agencies Return to Regular Work Schedule Tomorrow
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Dec. 6, 2011) — The failed transformer that caused state offices in the Capital Plaza Tower and Fountain Place to be closed today has been replaced. All offices will reopen tomorrow and employees are expected to report at their regularly scheduled time.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday an alarm system notified employees of the Finance and Administration Cabinet’s Department for Facilities and Support Services’ 24-hour monitoring office that one of three transformers located in the Capital Plaza Tower had failed, limiting the power supply to the Capital Plaza Complex.
Due to the power outages, approximately 850 state employees were told to stay home from work today. Because employees were directed not to report to work, they will be paid for the day and the time off will not impact their leave balance.
The transformer was about 40 years old and age is the expected cause of the failure. Facilities employees were able to replace the unit with a new one today. The Frankfort Plant Board assisted by disconnecting and reconnecting the main electrical power supply to enable repair work to be performed.
