‘NATURE’S FINEST’ FINE TUNES FOR THE FUTURE
Kentucky’s most popular line of specialty license plates – the Nature’s Finest series featuring a native bobcat, cardinal and viceroy butterfly – might be getting a makeover.
Public comments and design suggestions are invited, and a contact committee has been established through the Nature Plate Marketing and Awareness Committee.
“It’s not that sales are in the slow lane,” said Frank Fitzpatrick, chairman of the committee. “We simply want the Kentucky nature plates to remain a fresh image on the road, to continue their crucial role in protecting the wilderness and scenic beauty of our state.
“From the mountains in the east to the wetlands in the west, Kentucky itself is a canvas. We welcome new ideas for the program’s future,” Fitzpatrick said.
One in 20 Kentucky cars on the road bears a Kentucky Nature plate, attesting to how Kentucky drivers care for the outdoors. Since 1995, proceeds from sales of the specialty plates – a tax deductible $10 of each registration fee – have helped fund the purchase of more than 25,000 acres of pristine habitat and wild river corridors across Kentucky.
More than 100,000 nature plates are in circulation, which translates to more than $1 million contributed to the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund Board, which buys environmentally significant tracts of land from willing sellers.
Comments and suggestions should be sent to natureplate@ky.gov or Nature Plate, 375 Versailles Road, Frankfort, Ky. 40601 by July 15. Should the board opt for new designs, winning artist(s) will receive a certificate of recognition. New plates would not go into circulation until January 2008.
