Surface miner killed in accident
PIKEVILLE, Ky. (March 13, 2007) - The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing (OMSL) is investigating a fatal accident at a surface mine in Pike County.
The victim was identified as Charles I. Griffith, 48, of Pikeville. The accident occurred at Double E Augering Inc. mine No. 2, at Steele in the Feds Creek area of Pike County.
The Pikeville District office of OMSL was notified of the accident at 4:10 p.m. EDT on Monday. The initial indication is that the victim was operating an excavator, which overturned as he was positioning it. In keeping with procedure, the mine has been closed for investigation.
"I want to express my sympathy to Mr. Griffith’s family and friends," Governor Ernie Fletcher said. "Mining is an occupation with many hazards, but we are determined to keep working to improve mine safety."
