Young artists illustrate beauty of Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 12, 2006) - Ten student artists from around Kentucky have been awarded prizes for their drawings for the "Unbridled Spirit - Beauty Unbound" poster contest held in connection with Commonwealth Cleanup Week sponsored by the state Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet (EPPC).

EPPC Secretary LaJuana S. Wilcher made presentations today at the Capitol. Students received plaques and the classroom, library or resource center of their choice got $500 for environmental education materials.

Winners were: Joshua Sloas, second grade, Isonville Elementary, Isonville; Eden E. Hadley, kindergarten, Longest Elementary, Greenville; Kristen Pedersen, second grade, St. Camillus Academy, Corbin; James F. Line, fifth grade, Bedford Elementary School, Bedford; Noah Miller, fifth grade, a homeschooled student, Turners Station; Houston Gillenwater, fifth grade, Tompkinsville Elementary, Tompkinsville; Ariana Anastasia Doderer, sixth grade, Central Elementary School, Paintsville; Colbi Howard, sixth grade, Conkwright Middle School, Winchester; Brandon Collins, seventh grade, A.B. Combs Elementary, Combs; and Kasondra Welch, ninth grade, Paintsville High School, Paintsville.

The 8th annual Commonwealth Cleanup Week, including cleanup activities, was held March 19-25, 2006. The 1998 Kentucky General Assembly designated the fourth week in March as an opportunity for Kentuckians to participate in "activities that highlight the natural beauty of their communities."
