FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 23, 2003)-The modernization of mine mapping, environmental education trends and the soon to be implemented 8-hour ozone standard are all topics for the 27th (Annual) Governor’s Conference on the Environment. The conference will be held Oct. 27-28 at the Embassy Suites Hotel, Newtown Pike in Lexington.
The conference will open at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27 with an overview from Henry C. List, secretary of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet.
The theme for this year’s conference is "Setting the Stage for Continued Success," as the cabinet looks toward a new administration and future environmental challenges. "We’ve made a lot of progress addressing serious environmental concerns in the past few years," List said. "However there’s still many more issues on the horizon that will be of great importance to Kentuckians. I think particular attention needs to be placed on improving and maintaining the state’s air quality. That’s just one of many topics that we hope to touch on during this year’s conference."
Gov. Paul Patton is scheduled to address conference attendees during the Environmental Excellence awards banquet Monday at 6 p.m. Environmental Excellence Awards are presented to organizations, companies and private citizens for their efforts to protect Kentucky’s environment. Outstanding employees of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet will also be recognized.
Panels will discuss include air quality initiatives, environmental education partnerships between Kentucky’s universities and new technological advancements in mine mapping.
