CALVERT CITY, Ky. (March 13, 2007) – ISP CHEMICALS LLC, a Marshall County chemical manufacturer, has been accepted as a Master member of KY EXCEL, the environmental leadership program of Governor Ernie Fletcher’s administration.  Master membership is the highest membership level.

KY EXCEL members become eligible for the voluntary program by committing to perform environmentally beneficial projects that are not required by Kentucky’s environmental laws.  ISP CHEMICALS voluntarily chose to build a new above-ground waste water treatment plant and install a hard-pipe conveyance system for all of its process waste waters.  The company also committed to install tank secondary containment on high priority tanks and install overfill protection alarms and automatic overfill shutoff valves to reduce the risk of potential releases.  In addition, it voluntarily promised to close and remediate old waste water conveyance trenches and lagoons on their property.  This will include dredging and proper disposal of waste water sediments from both the trenches and lagoons.

“ISP’s voluntary decision to enhance its facility’s environmental performance will benefit the Calvert City area for many years,” said Aaron Keatley, director of the Division of Compliance Assistance in the Department for Environmental Protection.  “The facility’s commitment to take these steps and stand out as an environmental leader is truly commendable.”

ISP CHEMICALS’ environmental policy commits to continually reduce its impact on the environment by minimizing, preventing, or where possible, eliminating environmental risks, hazards and concerns.  The company also had to demonstrate comprehensive environmental management planning and submit to an independent third-party assessment of compliance prior to becoming a member.

“I am proud to work for a company that takes environmental stewardship seriously and sees it as an important part of doing business and being a good neighbor in the community,” said Jamie Leonard, environmental compliance director at ISP CHEMICALS.  “We have a lot of environmental projects going on that are going to be beneficial to the environment and to the citizens in the area, as well as give us the ability to manufacture in full compliance with all state and federal requirements for the foreseeable future.”

ISP CHEMICALS manufactures industrial organic chemicals, chemical products and industrial gases.  The facility employs approximately 520 individuals and is the largest industrial employer in Marshall County.

KY EXCEL provides multiple membership levels that are open to any individual, organization, community or business that wishes to voluntarily contribute to Kentucky’s environmental excellence.  Learn more by visiting the Web site at www.KYEXCEL.ky.gov or by calling the Kentucky Division of Compliance Assistance at 800-926-8111.
