Student Artists Honored for Eco-Art Contest

FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 25, 2013) –– In honor of Earth Week, the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection (DEP) is honoring the winning 2013 Eco-Art Contest high school artists by presenting awards at the respective schools. In its fourth year, Kentucky students submitted artwork in categories of conservation, pollution prevention and environmental protection and used media types of drawing/painting/print, mixed media, sculpture and photographs.

The winners of the 2013 Eco-Art Contest are Diana Pickett from Pleasure Ridge Park High School in Louisville; the students in Jennifer Spade’s art classes at Paul Blazer High School in Ashland; and Taylor DeWeese, Haley Hunt and Alexis Mijares from Metcalfe County High School in Edmonton.

            “It is an honor for the department to showcase Kentucky high school students’ expression of our environment. This contest supports our mission by encouraging students to incorporate the environment into their artwork and inspire others about environmental issues,” said R. Bruce Scott, DEP commissioner.

            Artwork from the 2013 contest winners, along with past years’ winning submissions, will be displayed in the DEP Training Center in Frankfort, where it will be viewed by hundreds of visitors.
