Public Welcome to Third Annual Charles McDowell Rehabilitation Center Open House Oct. 21 in Louisville
FRANKFORT, Ky . (Oct. 16, 2015) – The Charles W. McDowell Rehabilitation Center will host its third annual open house Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 8412 Westport Road in Louisville. The event is designed to educate the public about its rehabilitation services for people who are blind or visually impaired and build awareness about the services offered through the Kentucky Office for the Blind (OFB). The free event also celebrates October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month .
Participants can tour the center which opened in 1994, meet guide dog teams, watch Braille demonstrations, try out equipment designed for people with limited vision, and learn about bioptic driving and using white canes. Visitors also can talk to vendors and representatives from various organizations that serve visually impaired people.
The 44,000-square-foot center houses classrooms, a dormitory wing, a cafeteria, an auditorium and a recreation room. Training opportunities at the center are designed to help people who are blind or visually impaired achieve educational, vocational and independent living goals.
