KDLA Celebrates Kentucky Archives Month
FRANKFORT, Ky. - Kentucky Archives Month is planned for October 2009, in conjunction with American Archives Month. This year the Commonwealth of Kentucky will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln was born on Feb. 12, 1809, in Hardin County (present day LaRue County), Kentucky.
There are almost 300 archival and manuscript repositories in Kentucky that hold archival records, such as personal papers, photographs, diaries, letters and government records documenting the state’s history and leisure activities. Many of these institutions are hosting open houses, exhibits, special programs and speakers to highlight historical materials available for research in Kentucky archival and manuscript repositories.
In honor of Kentucky Archives Month, the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives will host four “Lunch and Learn” talks:
• October 6 – Walter Bowman will speak on “The First World War and the Mexican Border Campaign: Resources Available for Genealogical and Historical Research.”
• October 13 – The Kentucky State Historical Records Advisory Board will show its documentary: Finding Our Way Home: Historical Records in Kentucky.
• October 20 – Beth Shields will speak on “The Kentucky Historical Society’s Oral History Collection.”
• October 27 – Mark Myers will speak on “Electronic Records in Kentucky.”
Each talk will begin at noon in the Conference Room at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, 300 Coffee Tree Road in Frankfort. Participants are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch.
