Jobless rates up in 87 counties from February 2005 to February 2006

FRANKFORT — Unemployment rates rose in 87 Kentucky counties between February 2005 and February 2006, fell in 28 counties and stayed the same in five counties, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training in the Education Cabinet.
In February 2006, 24 counties had a jobless rate at or above 10 percent compared to 14 counties that recorded double-digit rates in February 2005.
Woodford County’s 4.9 percent jobless rate was the lowest in the commonwealth. Other low rates were recorded in Scott County, 5.2 percent; Fayette County, 5.3 percent; Oldham County, 5.4 percent; Madison County, 5.5 percent; Franklin County, 5.6 percent; Jessamine County, 5.7 percent; Shelby County, 5.8 percent; Boone County, 5.9 percent; and Warren County, 6 percent.
Magoffin County recorded the state’s highest unemployment rate — 13 percent. It was followed by Menifee County, 12.9 percent; Jackson County, 12.7 percent; Morgan County, 12.4 percent; Wolfe County, 12.1 percent; Clay County, 12 percent; Todd County, 11.9 percent; Lewis County, 11.7 percent; Bath County, 11.2 percent; and Leslie County, 11 percent.
Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks. The statistics in this news release are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisons between United States, state and counties figures.
