Jobless rates up in 67 counties from April 2005 to April 2006

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 2, 2006) — Unemployment rates rose in 67 Kentucky counties between April 2005 and April 2006, fell in 46 counties and stayed the same in seven counties, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training in the Education Cabinet.
In April 2006, four counties had a jobless rate at or above 10 percent compared to four counties that recorded double-digit rates in April 2005.
Boone and Gallatin counties’ 4.4 percent jobless rates were the lowest in the commonwealth. Other low rates were recorded in Fayette, Oldham and Woodford counties, 4.5 percent each; Madison, Scott and Warren counties, 4.7 percent each; and Bracken, Jessamine, Robertson and Shelby counties, 4.8 percent each.
McCreary County recorded the state’s highest unemployment rate—11.2 percent. It was followed by Todd County, 11.1 percent; Magoffin County 10.9 percent; Muhlenberg County, 10.3 percent; Christian, Clay and Leslie counties, 9.7 percent each; Wolfe County, 9.5 percent; Elliott County, 9.2 percent; and Jackson County, 9.1 percent.
Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks. The statistics in this news release are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisons between United States, state and counties figures.
