The grant, which was applied for by the University of Kentucky, will fund the improvement of an existing culvert located at the intersection of Nicholasville Road and Alumni Drive; the creation of retention/detention basins and permeable pavement for University parking lots near Commonwealth Stadium. These improvements will prevent future flooding that, in the past, has damaged property and caused the loss of life. After an applicant review, these funds were awarded through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program under Federal Disaster No. 1818, that was declared Feb. 2009, as a result of a severe winter storm that produced ice, snow and flooding.

The grant will be administered through the Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) State Hazard Mitigation Program Section. Hazard mitigation is any action taken to eliminate or reduce the long-term risk to human life and property from natural and manmade hazards. While preparedness and response focus primarily on reacting to a disaster itself, mitigation is a continuous activity intended to make families and communities more disaster-resistant.

The project will be managed through the Capital Projects Management Division of the University of Kentucky. Construction will be scheduled to provide the least amount of disruption to the operations of the University and the general public.
